The St. Catharines & Area Arts Council, Niagara Artist Centre and the St. Catharines Downtown Association are partnering together to showcase the arts in our Downtown. A celebration of original artwork, installations, exhibitions and performing arts will take place in historic Downtown, St. Catharines. Galleries, restaurants, cafes, merchants and businesses join together to present a variety of arts at out of the ordinary locations.

ArtsCity will happen on the first Friday night (6-9pm) of each month (starting in May) and will run through October.

The aroma of chili will be filling the air over lunch hour, in downtown St. Catharines on Friday February 19th, as the fourth annual Downtown Chili Cook-off gets under way. The event will feature cooks and their teams vying for trophies along with bragging rights for the year.

Tickets will be sold at the door, including tickets to sample 10 different entries, water, and a ballot to vote for the Peoples' Choice chili. Tickets available at the door for the competition and tasting, but to avoid disappointment be sure to come early! A panel of judges, including St. Catharines dignitaries and community personalities, will judge the competition chili, in a blind taste test. The winners for the judged and people’s choice awards will be announced at the end of the event. This event is Friday February 19, from 11am – 2pm, at Market Square in Downtown St. Catharines. Tickets are $10.00 each at the door, with all proceeds going to Community Care.  The cook-off will benefit Community Care programs in St. Catharines, and Community Care will be on hand at the event selling toques, soft drinks and taking donations. We raised over $3,600.00 last year, and the need is even greater this year.

Great things are happening Downtown on July 10. The 8^th Downtown Classic Car Show once again will close St. Paul Street to some of the region’s best classic automobiles! Each year close to 500 classic and custom vehicles head to downtown to strut their stuff! 

You’ll want to set aside the entire day, as there are more than just classic cars downtown: the merchants have great summer sales and cool boutiques to browse around in, there’s a fabulous selection of restaurants and patio’s to kick up your feet and have a bite to eat.

Millar’s Auto presents a new area this year – with the Big Toys Zone – head down to 340 St. Paul Street and check out the heavy equipment display! Get up close and personal with fire trucks, police vehicles, dump trucks, front end loaders and more!

Plus there are 2 stages filled with entertainment to check out.

q       The giant Mansion House patio will have Good Rockin Tonight (tribute to Johnny Cash, Carl Perking and Jerry Lee Lewis) starting at 11am and playing throughout the day, and if you want to stay into the evening the patio continues on with a tribute to The Band at 6pm

q       The 366 Stage will be hosting Niagara’s 3rd Fiddle Festival, entertaining audience’s young and old all day. Fiddlers and step dancers will compete for cash and prizes throughout the day, and followed up by a street dance from 4p – 6p or later.

The Autodream Group presents the Kids Zone with interactive area at 123 St. Paul St where you can to Paint a Car and learn to juggle, be entertained by the magic of Alex Kazam roaming the show. Enjoy the Monster Truck bouncer and Super Hero meet and greet outside Mostly Comics.

Free public parking at all city parking garages (St. Paul Street & Carlisle Street), lots (Market Square & Garden Park) and meters (along King St. and over to Church St.). So you won’t have to worry about how long you are here or where to find a place to park.

Classic and Custom Vehicle Show N Shine information: no registration, admission or parking fee's. No advance registration. Goodie bags will be given out at the gate to the first 250 vehicles to arrive. Streets close at 8am and reopen at 5pm, please arrive between 8am and 12 noon for parking within the show area - we are usually full and have very limited parking left after 12noon. If you would like to park near/with your friends, please all arrive together as it is extremely difficult to save spots. Niagara Corvette Club will be on site helping out with parking this year...and taking donations for the Niagara Peninsula Children's Centre for their efforts!

Mark your calendars: Saturday July 10 - 2010

Downtown St. Catharines will play host to the 8th Annual Downtown Classic Car Show and the 3rd Annual Fiddle Fest.

The main streets will be filled with hundreds of classic cars and a fiddle and step dancing competition will be taking place throughout the entire day on the lower end of St. Paul Street.

The Fiddle Fest will be happening in front of Silver Spire Church at 366 St. Paul Street, and the church will be hosting a BBQ, offering food and refreshments .

In addition to the many great fiddlers and step dancers that will be competing on the day of the show, the popular young rock groups, The Golden Hammers & The Rockin' Daisies, will also be making an appearance.

Draws and prize giveaways will be happening throughout the day from the Fiddle Fest stage.

The Fiddle Fest combined with the Classic Car Show makes for a very exciting and busy day in Downtown St. Catharines. Over 5000 people attended last year, and we hope to have even more this year. This will be a fun filled, free day for all ages.

Applications for the Fiddle Fest are available for download, please click here. Applications are also available at Ryson's store which is located at 5 Court Street in Downtown St. Catharines. Entry fees for the competition are $12 each, $20 for entry in two categories, and $15 for a duet.

Sponsors are always welcome in the form of cash donations, which will be used as prize money in each of the categories. Any donations made will be noted in the Fiddle Fest brochure, and also on the award certificates. Receipts for donations are available.

 This is a hands-on session where you will:

• Set up and manager your Facebook Fan page including, adding photos, creating events, analysing statistics and information about Facebook ads.
• Set up and customize your Twitter page, follow people, tweeting and re-tweeting, direct messages and some tactics to engage your followers.

You'll finish the session with your pages created, friends found and ready to socialize online!

 This is a hands-on session where you will:

• Set up a free blog site in Wordpress, including a design template.
• Learn to add pages, create blog posts, add widgets and integrate your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts.

Social Media is forever changing how we communicate with each other, businesses and organizations.  There has been a dramatic shift in how we make decisions about purchasing a product, visiting a vacation spot, where we get our news and where we donate our money.   The conversations are happening all around us, the question is - are you going to join in?

These workshops have been designed for small to medium business owners, not-for-profits, self-employed, volunteers and anyone interested in using social media to create, connect and engage. 

The first workshop will provide background and an overview of social media and the most popular tools. 

The second is a working session where attendees will learn how to choose tools, fill their social media toolbox and develop schedules and strategies for managing their online brand.

The third workshop is a hands on session where you will create and start your social networking through Facebook Fan Pages, Twitter and WordPress blogsites.

 

 

At arnoldi:mcpherson we focus on how people use social media tools, how people interact with each other via the social web and how our clients can use social media tools to spread their message, connect with people, build relationships and achieve their goals.

Janice Arnoldi is a former radio journalist and worked in corporate communications for Ontario Hydro and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. She has taught New Media at the International Academy of Design in Toronto and at Niagara College. 

Robin McPherson's focus is on analyzing, researching and studying the world of social media and is always looking at new social tools and how they can be applied to different situations and clients.  Robin is currently the Co-Chair of the City of St. Catharines Heritage Committee and a member of the City's War of 1812 Committee. Robin studied History at the University of Toronto, Adult Education at Niagara College and Photography at Sheridan College. She also taught New Media at the International Academy of Design.

Janice and Robin have most recently established the Niagara/St.Catharines branch of the Social Media Club (SMC).  Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells started Social Media Club in March 2006 to help people find all the relevant communities of interest in which they want to participate. As of July 1, 2009 there are 72 active chapters in nine countries, and 95 in the process of forming.
